It seems to be commonly shared belief that quality of life is higher in the California than in Taiwan, with better air, more space, nicer living space, etc. Well, that's only if you take the humans' perspective.
Hanging out with Noah and Ben has made us appreciate the perspectives of bugs a lot more. Tonight we took an after-dinner walk/hike into the Belmont hills, an open space reserve. Noah likes to call it a hike since it is pretty rugged and he saw deers and other animals there before. For one thing, it was super cold and windy. We had to turn around after 30 minutes because we were all freezing in spite of our fleeces and long pants! And--what a completely different scene from our last hike in Hsinchu! In Taiwan, you see a ton of insects and creatures, large and small, plenty of muddy spots, lush plants, and, my favorite of all, ferns of all sorts! In Belmont, the plants are all super dry, as if they haven't gotten water in ages, and we don't see many moving creatures. I know the lizards and spiders are all there, but we bet their lives are not as good and easy as their peers in Taiwan.
So, my Californian bugs, work hard--so one day you can immigrate to Taiwan for a better life! The Taiwan dream! (Paul said Sri Lanka is probably even a lot better, both in terms of the climate and the benevolent non-animal-harming Buddhists!) I bet the bug immigration agents in Taipei are not less difficult and mean as the the human counterparts in the US....
