The English for camel is horse; the English for plum is apple

We have found that one unique feature of a bilingual child is how they relate to new words. Ben has asked some amusing questions. When reading about a camel, he asked my mom, in Chinese, for the English translation. When mama said it was camel and the Chinese is luo-tuo, he said, "No, the English word for it is a horse."

Today, after lunch, we were enjoying some plums. He said, again in Chinese, "Mama, what's the English word for a plum?" I said, it is plum and the Chinese word is Li-zi. He said "Is the English 'apple'?" I think for something that's novel or confusing, he asks for an English translation.

Noah had a great week at gymnastics. He's a little out of it on the performance day (not inconsistent with this usual behavior) but he just loved it.
The boys enjoyed nana and papa's visit, and had a chance to go down to visit Uncle Jim and Aunt Deedee in Aptos/Santa Cruz.
Our friends, the Provasniks, visited from Arlington, and we went to the Golden Gate Park, Half Moon Bay, and the kids had a great time playing together after being apart for a year.
Ben and Noah talk to me everyday. They do great on the phone reporting all about their day and asking me what I am doing ("Are you going to the BART station mama?" "What's the noise there, is it a bus? What kind?")
