B-day at the zoo

We decided to celebrate Ben's second birthday with an impromptu trip to the Taipei zoo. It turned out to be a wonderful and cozy way to have a fun and memorable birthday. Ben seemed really happy that this trip was in his honor.

At the end, we let them each pick out a small stuffed animal. Ben picked Lion, which he named "Xin shi-zi" (New Lion), and Noah found the cutest baby penguin, which he has held since purchase, and may replace his Lamby as his favorite.

After the zoo visit, we decided to check out the nearby hill town named "Mao-kong". It was quite beautiful, with numerous tea houses overlooking the city of Taipei and surrounding mountains. After a dinner of fried rice with tea tree oil, crispy shrimp from the stream, omelet with dried turnip, and a mountain veggie, we went to have some tea. It was supposed to be a romantic and leisurely spot, but of course, with two tired and wound-up kids, it wasn't at all leisurely. Nevertheless, it was fun being in the hills overlooking the nighttimeTaipei.

Happy birthday to Ben! I'm glad he enjoyed the zoo and made a new friend , "xin shizi". Noah looks very cute with his penguin too. It's nice that you were able to visit Maokong afterwards too. I used to hike up there, almost weekly, while I was at Chengchi University, just at the foot of the mountain. The scenery is great and there are some great teashops and impressive temples. Try to go back during the day if you have a chance.
